Mike Flynn is the director of Mathematics Leadership Programs at Mount Holyoke College, where he runs the Master of Arts in Mathematics Teaching program and leads a wide variety of professional learning opportunities for teachers, teacher-leaders, coaches, administrators, and staff-developers. This work connects him with educators from around the world who are interested in advancing the learning and teaching of mathematics. Mike is also the author of Beyond Answers: Exploring Mathematical Practices with Young Children.
Mike’s latest work centers on creating more interactive and engaging online learning. He designed the dynamic hybrid learning model that blends on-campus and online students for live, interactive learning in mathematics. He also created virtual professional learning networks, connecting thousands of teachers, math coaches, and administrators to study current and engaging topics in math education. Mike has spent the last two years studying the change process and resistance to change in mathematics education. This work is critically important for teachers, coaches, and administrators looking to reform any aspect of the teaching and learning of mathematics in their settings. Districts throughout the country work with Mike to implement and support systemic change efforts that are both effective and sustainable.
Prior to this work Mike taught second grade at the William E. Norris Elementary School in Southampton, MA for 14 years. He was named the Massachusetts Teacher of the Year in 2008 and was a 2010 recipient of the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics Teaching. He tweets at @MikeFlynn55.
